Is solar legal in the Cayman Islands? +
Yes. Solar is fully legal in the Cayman Islands and has been actively encouraged for years. GreenTech has been installing grid-connected systems under the CORE feed-in tariff program since its inception. It is not only legal. It is the smart financial decision most Cayman homeowners are making.
Do I need batteries to go solar? +
No. Grid-tied systems feed excess power back to the grid through the CORE feed-in tariff, earning you credits against your bill. Batteries are optional. Excellent for hurricane backup and self-consumption optimization, but not required to start saving. The grid-tied setup is the most cost-effective entry point for most Cayman homeowners.
Will solar panels survive a hurricane? +
Yes, when properly installed. GreenTech systems are rated for 160+ MPH winds. The key is certified, experienced installation. A system mounted by an uncertified installer may not hold in a storm. Our NABCEP-certified team ensures every mounting, wiring, and connection point is built to withstand Cayman's conditions.
Does solar still work on cloudy days? +
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight. Overcast conditions reduce output slightly, but Cayman's cloud cover is light by Caribbean standards. Your system will still generate significant power on cloudy days, and on sunny days, it often generates more than your home uses, feeding the excess back to the grid for credit.
What is the CORE feed-in tariff and how does it work? +
CORE (Consumer Owned Renewable Energy) is the Cayman Islands' feed-in tariff program. When your solar panels generate more electricity than your home uses, the excess is fed back into the grid and you receive a credit on your bill. This makes grid-tied solar in Cayman highly cost-effective. Your meter runs backwards, and you effectively get paid for the power you generate.
